Preferred Term:
photobioreactors
Definition:
A closed system of plastic or glass containers which allows for the input of light, nutrients, and carbon dioxide to cultivate phototrophic microorganisms, such as microalgae. The growth environment can be more easily controlled compared to open pond cultivation, preventing water evaporation and increasing biomass productivity. However, photobioreactors often require high material and energy costs, making scalability problematic.
