A geologic formation or structure that transmits water in sufficient quantity to supply the needs for a water development, such as a well. The term "water-bearing" is sometimes used synonymously with "aquifer" when a stratum furnishes water for a specific use. Aquifers are usually saturated sands, gravel, fractured rock, or cavernous and vesicular rock.
