Ghrelin, a 28-amino acid peptide with an octanoyl group on serine in the third position, stimulates somatotropin secretion and is an antagonist of somatostatin. It is synthesized in many tissues, but ghrelin cells are concentrated in the stomach mucosa. It stimulates food intake and decreases fat utilization.
