Definition:
Enfermedad infecciosa muy contagiosa causada por el virus varicela zóster (Human herpesvirus 3). Normalmente afecta a los niños. Se propaga mediante contacto directo o las vías respiratorias, por medio de núcleos goticulares. Se caracteriza por la aparición en la piel y la mucosa de abundantes lesiones vesiculares pruriginosas sucesivas que se rompen fácilmente y forman una costra. En los niños la varicela es relativamente benigna; sin embargo, en los adultos se puede complicar con neumonía y encefalitis.
