Derivado de la lovastatina y un potente inhibidor competitivo de la 3-hidroxi-3-metilglutaril-coenzima-A reductasa (hidroximetilglutaril CoA reductasas), que constituye la enzima limitante en la biosíntesis del colesterol. Además, puede intervenir en la producción de hormonas esteroides. Debido a la inducción de receptores de LDL hepático, incrementa la descomposición del colesterol LDL.
