Preferred Term:
cytoplasmic incompatibility
Definition:
Reproductive incompatibility between allopatric populations of the same species in which eggs fertilized by sperm from males infected with a rickettsial endosymbiont fail to hatch. This effect occurs chiefly in insects as well as some other arthropods, and the most studied and apparently most common of these reproductive parasites are Wolbachia spp.
