The use of unplanned, naturally ignited fires to burn and be naturally extinguished by rainfall or snow storms in order to achieve the natural benefits of fire to an ecosystem, such as vegetative diversity, mixture of wildlife habitats and reduction of heavy fuelwood accumulation.
