Crassulacean acid metabolism
Definition:
Biochemical pathway where the initial carbon fixation occurs in the outer mesophyll cells during the night when the stomates are open. When stomates are closed during the day, the C4 acids are transferred from vacuoles to the chloroplasts where the Calvin cycle occurs to produce glucose.
