Fluido atóxico, incoloro, insípido e inodoro, con un punto de ebullición de -196° C. Expuesto al aire, se evapora en la atmósfera con gran rapidez. Se utiliza principalmente como un criógeno (refrigerante). Puede producir quemaduras graves al tacto, por lo que se debe manipular con cuidado.
